Hoboken University Medical Center unveils state-of-the-art Emergency Department |
New 17,000-square foot facility delivers faster, better care to Hudson area patients
HOBOKEN, NJ, June 15, 2009 — Hoboken University Medical Center showcased its state-of-the-art Emergency Department to dignitaries and guests today and will officially open its doors to emergency patients beginning at 4 a.m. on Tuesday, June 16.
“Patients can expect a new standard in emergency care with a facility that is not only larger, but also better and faster in that we’re also the first hospital in the nation to adopt some cutting-edge clinical practices,” said Hoboken UMC CEO Spiros Hatiras. “The area’s most advanced Emergency Department is now in Hoboken.”
Located at the new entrance at Fourth Street and Willow Avenue, the 17,000-square foot facility features 17 new treatment rooms, four pediatric treatment rooms, dedicated areas for women’s services, orthopedics and mental health, as well as two trauma rooms for more seriously injured patients. “This Emergency Department is unique because it was designed with the input of doctors, nurses and ER Techs — the people who actually work in the ER,” said Director of Emergency Services George Safran M.D. “We’ve been able to perfect the layout and function of the space which allows us to streamline the admitting process, reduce waiting times and improve our staff’s ability to care for patients.”
Hospital officials also expect to see a rise in patient admissions once the new Emergency Department opens. Hoboken UMC treats 32,000 emergency patients annually and now has the capacity to serve 60,000 patients, doubling the current capacity.
Highlights of the new Emergency Department include:
The only 100% monitored ER in New Jersey. Hoboken University Medical Center is the first hospital in the nation to use NetGuard™ an FDA approved, state-of-the-art patient monitoring system that uniquely and economically monitors the electrical activity of the heart (ECG) in order to protect the unmonitored patient population in the event of a life-threatening heart rhythm.
100% board-certified care. All physicians in the new Emergency Department are 100% board-certified. This means patients can expect top treatment by doctors who are up on the latest advances, and continue to develop the knowledge and skills needed to handle any medical emergency.
100% Registered Nurses, 100% certified in lifesaving procedures. All emergency nurses in the new Emergency Department are registered nurses (RNs). The team of RNs are also 100% Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certified, so no matter what the medical emergency is, patients are assured the highest quality care from professionals trained in lifesaving procedures.
Trauma Rooms designed for critical cases. Two new trauma rooms are fully equipped with cutting-edge equipment to treat serious injuries. Not only can the spacious rooms accommodate more doctors, nurses and ER techs, they are designed with 360-degree mobility with surgical lighting on moveable booms to provide easier access for procedures ranging from IVs to intubation. Radiographic treatment tables allow patients to be imaged on the spot without need for transport. And support apparatus such as oxygen and anesthesia are also mobile and can be deployed quickly and efficiently.
The New Jersey State Department of Health and Senior Services has also designated Hoboken University Medical Center a Primary Stroke Center. Stroke victims are assured superior care with an acute stroke team in place comprised of a board certified emergency physician, neurologist, radiologist and specially trained nurses and laboratory staff available 24. 7. With trained medical professionals and a “fast track” system in place, stroke victims can be diagnosed and treated more quickly, which improves the likelihood of recovery.
Four new Pediatric Treatment Rooms. Designed for excellent, kid-friendly care, this section features a pediatric bathroom and dedicated nursing station to provide emergency treatment with a gentle touch. Hoboken UMC is proud to be one of a handful of Emergency Departments in Hudson County to offer board-certified pediatricians on duty, not just on call, 24/7. All emergency staff are certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
Women’s Emergency Services. With a dedicated Obstetrics/Gynecology treatment room, patients who present with a pregnancy complication or issues such as acute abdominal pain or possible infection receive greater privacy and comfort. Equipped to identify a medical condition and begin treatment right away, this room also includes a private bathroom and shower.
Wireless communication. A brand new wireless communication system using a Vocera Communication Badge enables two-way voice conversation between medical personnel without the need for a phone or handset. This allows the ER staff to continue to use their hands while communicating to necessary parties, and reduces the spread of germs and risk of infection.
Infection control is a priority. The new Emergency Department includes the latest touchless features, proven to reduce risk of infection. This means sinks, soap dispensers and paper towels all operate by sensor to reduce the spread of germs. In the trauma rooms, medical staff can also “scrub in” and sanitize with the touch of their knee.
Quicker Lab Results. Emergency patients can expect rapid specialized diagnosis thanks to a state-of-the-art pneumatic tube system. The new tube system delivers critical materials faster and more efficiently (no more waiting for an elevator to deliver blood work or tissue samples to the hospital lab) so patient treatment begins sooner.
Greater Comfort. With Wi-Fi access, a refreshment area, additional restrooms and a beautiful fish tank (studies show these water creatures have a calming affect in times of stress), the new waiting room is infinitely more comfortable. Don’t get too comfortable. With three triage stations, 17 new treatment rooms and dedicated areas for pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology and orthopedics, Hoboken UMC’s goal is to get patients into a room faster, so they’ll be seen by a physician sooner.
